GROUNDWORK - Love: Turn on almost any music radio station and you’ll likely hear a song about love within a matter of minutes. But if you open the newspaper or read your favorite online news site, you’ll likely need to search a few pages of stories before you read about love. So how much is love really reflected in our culture? And is it the same love the Bible describes? The January 22nd Groundwork discussion, based on 1 Corinthians 13, focuses on the virtue of love. Find a local radio station or listen online at www.GroundworkOnline.com.
KING’S ACTIVITIES January 2012
INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES CONFERENCE @ KING’S – January 18th and 19th
Black Friday, Occupy Wall Street, economic instability – these topics are front and centre in public discourse – and front and centre at this season’s semi-annual Interdisciplinary Studies conference at The King’s University College’s as well. Our theme is “You’re Richer WHEN you Think”. Our plenary session lectures will be offered by Scott Bader-Saye, author of “Following Jesus in a Culture of Fear”; William Cavanaugh, author of “Being Consumed: Economics and Christian Desire”; and also Aiden Enns, editor of GEEZ Magazine. There will also be several breakout sessions and a Fair Trade Fair. For more information please visit the website at www.kingsu.ca/2012/january.html . Admission is free of charge and open to the public.
Ministry Webinars - Too busy to attend a training event? Join others across the CRC for "Webinar Wednesdays" - one-hour, live workshops you can attend from your home, office, or church. All you need is a computer. Get the full schedule and free registration at: www.crcna.org/webinars
KIDS CORNER - Dare Ya: Have you ever been dared to do something you knew was wrong? Join Liz as he tries to figure out how not to give in to peer pressure on this week’s Kids Corner. Then contact Kids Corner at P.O. Box 5070, Burlington ON L7R3Y8 or kids@kidscorner.net for your very own Bible study.
Moved to Compassion - The Scripture tells us Jesus was moved to compassion for the crowd - for those who were harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd. He still is. We live among people who live “without a shepherd.” Continue to pray Jesus’ Prayer Request: “Lord of Harvest, send workers out into your harvest field! A joint effort of Home and World Missions.
DEVOTIONS FOR LENT - Lent begins on Wednesday, February 22. Engage your heart and mind this Lenten season with "Forty: Devotions for Lent," a daily devotional that explores the biblical motif of “forty” and shows how it points to Jesus. Read a sample at FaithAliveResources.org/Forty or call 1-800-333-8300 to order. Quantity discounts are available.
CRWRC - Pray for Peace in Dadaab Refugee Camp, Kenya: In order to prevent violence against women (as they are often attacked when they leave Dadaab camp to collect firewood), CRWRC implemented an improved Stove Project to reduce firewood needs. But due to increasing conflict at the nearby Kenya-Somalia border (and within Dadaab itself) the UN has limited humanitarian activities, and CRWRC was forced to halt operations. Please pray that God will bring security to the region and peace for people in Dadaab.
CRWRC Receives CIDA Funding - In December, CRWRC received word that two funding proposals to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) had been approved. This includes one for $5.6 million over 5 years that will promote sustainable livelihood development through food security and economic growth initiatives. The second one is for $1.67 million over four years for adolescent health and rights. This funding is contingent upon a portion (25%) of the project costs being raised by CRWRC from Canadian individuals in the coming years. This will enable CRWRC to reach 65,000 men and women, and 5,000 adolescents in 7 countries. For more information, visit www.crwrc.org.
A field reporter in Cambodia says,
“Many of the young churches are house churches, and with traditional Cambodian
houses built on stilts, the churches literally meet under the house, often the
house of the church planter. This was the case with the first house church we
visited in a small village, greeting a young pastor and three dozen believers
meeting under his house. We brought with us boxes of
New Testaments in the Khmer language. For those who
received copies, it was the first time they had ever had even a portion of the
Bible in their heart language.” Imagine reading Luke 2 for the first time in
your own language. Praise God for the New Testament message brought to these
believers! www.bibleleague.ca
